Student Wellbeing Report - May 2026

Faith

On the anniversary of the death of Sr Irene McCormack (21st May), may we be reminded of her work as an advocate for change; she strived for equal education for all children, no matter where and how they lived. May we continue to work to bring hope to the lives of those in poverty.

Travelling To and From School on Trains

We recently had a near miss where a student was hit by the train's mirror as it passed the student. Fortunately the student was not seriously injured but still required medical assistance. We have many students departing MSJ to travel by train to get home. We ask that you remind your child of the safety precautions around standing behind the yellow line. Many students are on phones, carrying bags that are often facing the train and can easily get caught as they are unaware of the approaching trains. We have scheduled some information sessions run by Metro to explain the seriousness of the situation.

Uniform

This is a reminder that students must be wearing their blazer to and from school in terms 2 and 3. Students must adhere to wearing their PE uniform only on days that they have PE or health. The dress and skirt length also continue to provide challenges for MSJ as students continue to roll them up. We will be communicating some further details about uniform expectations and consequences soon.

Child Safety

The Child Safe Standards are a set of 11 requirements that organisations must follow to create a culture and environment that is safe for children.

Child Safe Standard 4

Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.

Our commitment to the protection of students involves ensuring families and community members actively participate in promoting and upholding child safety and wellbeing. Our Catholic communities ensure systems, processes, policies and cultures encourage and respect the voices of children and young people.

When schools, families, carers and the wider community work in partnership regarding Child Safety and Wellbeing, children and young people:

  • Feel supported by a consistent network of trusted adults who have a shared responsibility for their safety and wellbeing
  • Are more likely to have early identification of issues as families and carers often notice changes first and their insights can help staff respond quickly and appropriately.
  • Experience greater cultural safety and inclusion because engagement with families, carers and communities helps ensure school practices respects children’s identities, backgrounds and experiences
  • Have greater opportunity to thrive and flourish because they know the important adults in their lives are communicating, collaborating and prioritising their safety.

See here for further details: Child Safe Standard 4

Community

It is great that we have been actively involved in a number of community events that provide direct support to those in need. Recently a number of our students and staff supported Joseph's Corner High Tea. Sr Jean Dwyer RSJ was the founder and it is great to see the work she started continuing as she founded and ran Joseph’s Corner as an independent charity to provide free counselling to families affected by addiction.

NCCD Parent Information

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting all students, we are now moving into the validation phase of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) this term. The NCCD process helps schools identify and document the adjustments and supports provided to students with disability to ensure they can access education on the same basis as their peers.

As part of the process, schools are required to inform parents and carers about the NCCD. It is recommended that families are provided with information on at least three occasions throughout the year. Please find attached an information sheet outlining the NCCD and its purpose. If you have any questions, please contact the College.

Supportive Friends Leadership Team

This term, the Supportive Friends Leadership Team have been busy writing letters to the students at Padiae Parish School in Timor Leste. The are sharing details about their lives and asking the students about the cultural differences. They are putting a little pack together including a cross-crochet bookmark wrapped in a friendship band in the colour of our schools, some stickers and stationary.

The Supportive Friends Team have also invited other members of the school community to write a letter to a student at Padiae Parish School and we are hopeful of building some further connections.

They are also recording a virtual College tour, showing the student at Padiae Parish School what a day in the life of an MSJ student looks like.

Below are some of the members of the Supportive Friends Leadership Team and the cards they are writing.
