Learning and Teaching Report - September 2025

Trial Examinations

To assist students undertaking a 3 / 4 Unit to achieve their potential, VCE trial Examinations are being held during the first week of the September holidays. These Trial examinations gave students the best opportunity to succeed in their final examinations. These examinations are compulsory and will be an opportunity to provide students with vital feedback on areas of strength and areas requiring improvement. Parents / Carers will be receiving a transcript of examination results to inform the progress of your child’s study program for end of year external examinations. These Transcripts will be available at the commencement of week 2 Term 4.

Examinations

At the conclusion of term 3, students in year 12 gathered for an assembly which outlined the requirements for the examinations and the guidelines for the end of year celebrations. This presentation was provided to families. During the assembly students completing a unit 3/4 subject were provided with an examination navigator that outlined dates of the exams, rules and regulations and approved materials for each of the examinations. Whilst each student was provided with a hard copy of the Navigator, they can also be found online.

Students can often find the time leading up to exams quite overwhelming, here are some tips that students might find useful during this time.

Celebrating Academic Excellence

Congratulations to our students who have been recognised with a St Ignatius Award for their outstanding academic achievements at the halfway point of 2025.

These students have excelled in every aspect of their learning - showing consistent effort, contributing thoughtfully to class discussions, displaying excellent organisational skills, and working collaboratively to make positive contributions across all year levels.

We are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to excellence.

Sound and Vision: A Celebration of Australian Music

The Instrumental Program at MSJ offers students exceptional training in strings, piano, guitar, drums, brass, voice, drama, and communication under the guidance of top-class teachers. On September 11th, these talented students showcased their skills in the annual concert, "Sound and Vision," featuring a distinctly Australian music theme.

This concert exemplifies everything the program stands for: collaboration, teamwork, and learning from each other. It was a wonderful evening where string ensembles joined voices with singers, guitarists harmonized with keyboards, and the drummers made everyone in the MMC secretly wish they'd chosen percussion over piano! The music selection was a journey through Australian classics, featuring beloved songs like "Sorrento Moon," "Never Tear Us Apart," "Four Seasons in One Day," "Riptide," and the timeless "Waltzing Matilda." Each piece highlighted different instrumental combinations while celebrating our rich musical heritage.

The finale was truly unforgettable. A stage packed with singers, string players, guitarists, keyboardists, and drummers united for an incredible rendition of John Farnham's "You're the Voice" – the perfect way to conclude this celebration of Australian music and showcase the remarkable achievements of our instrumental students.

It was an absolutely wonderful evening that left audiences buzzing with pride for these talented young musicians.

Sound and Vision: Junior Art Show

The Junior Art Show, held on the same evening as the College Instrumental Music Night, was a wonderful celebration of creativity and community. From beginning to end, the set up, exhibition and deinstallation ran seamlessly, made possible through the planning and teamwork of the Art Domain staff and Maintenance. Thank you to Denise Spiteri, Suzanne Goh, Deborah Dias, Nadia Graziotto, Laura Dalta-Viota, Clare Kubacki, Andrew Douglas, Kat Anastasi, Grace Gonzales, Alex Kowal and Helen Simcic for their passion collaborating with students in the classroom and assisting with hanging work.

The exhibition was a vibrant display of student talent and creativity, as well as the teaching and learning that shape our energetic and colourful art classrooms. The careful curation of works highlighted the breadth of ideas, techniques and media explored by our students. None of it could have happened without the expertise of our teachers, the support of our technicians, and the imagination of our student artists. Seeing students proudly present their resolved works to family and friends was a delight for all involved.

We were also fortunate to extend the exhibition into Thursday and Friday, giving classes and staff further opportunity to engage with the display – made possible through the generosity of PE and Maintenance for the space. Most importantly congratulations to our artists from Year 7 to 10 – it’s hard to believe this stunning exhibition was just a snapshot of their work!

We hope to see you all at the upcoming VCE Folio Night Exhibition on Tuesday 14th October at the College.

Learning Resource Centre

Book Week is a major feature of Term 3 in the Learning Resource Centre.

This year’s theme was Book an Adventure - so LRC staff planned several adventurous events we thought students would love. There was Design a Travel outfit using newspaper, crepe paper (in our House colours) and sticky tape. The talent operating the scissors and sticky tape was amazing to behold. The bows, flounces, fishtails, puffed sleeves, and the train! The finished designs were amazing. But were they practical for travelling? After a promenade around the LRC, Year 11 students were declared the winners with a stunning mermaid-style gown that featured bell sleeves and bow details. The dress with the train was a very close second.

The Paper Plane design competition featured some amazing aerodynamics and was won by Year 7 students with a plane that was both fast and stylish.

The Trivia Extravaganza saw 100 students and teachers pit their book knowledge against each other. It was won by a Year 7 team and their English teacher. They knew their Harry Potter from their Shakespeare.

We welcomed two special guests to MSJ for Book Week. The first was author illustrator Lucinda Gifford, who gave a fun presentation to art students about creating picture book characters, and very generously loaned us some of her original drawings, sketch books and props for a display in the LRC.

Our second guest was author Tristan Bancks who wrote the novel Detention, a powerful Australian adventure story that explores the human side of asylum seekers. The book is being studied in Year 7 English, so Tristan’s visit gave students the opportunity to ask lots of questions and get their books signed.

The Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge finished just before the end of term 3. MSJ had 70 students register with 19 students completing the challenge, a total of 596 books read and some really impressive book reviews written.

Remember to pick up a book these holidays. There are many reasons to read. Read because it’s joyous. Read because it’s good for you. Read because you can tell people you're growing your brain and too busy to do the dishes.

SEED Club’s Term of Creativity and Care

This term has been a very productive one for the SEED Club. We had harvested our first vegetables and herbs including carrots, parsley, and thyme. Students also enjoyed activities such as pressing flowers, making beeswax wraps, and, to finish the term, creating their own terrariums. It has been great to see the enthusiasm from the students!

Through the SEED Club, students are putting their faith into action by caring for the environment, celebrating the gift of creation, and building community with one another.
